The Museum für Neue Kunst invites the Musée international d’art naïf Anatole Jakovsky in Nice to take part in a Franco-German ‘friendly’ as part of its ‘Friendly Game’ series. Many so-called naïve artists are self-taught and, as a result, have long been excluded from the classical art-historical canon of modernism. The matching of and interplay between artworks from both collections challenge this hierarchy and invite alternative interpretations. Do the themes, visual language and techniques differ significantly? Unexpected encounters between the works and personalities involved encourage us to take a closer look.
Since 2013, the ‘Friendly Game’ series has set up a dialogue between private and public collections and works held in the MNK. This is not about competition, but about an enriching exchange, new ways of seeing and the joy of art itself.
