Global markets and local communities are closely intertwined. The Ethnological Collection focuses on two very different products: cocoa and cement. Two artistic perspectives demonstrate that the two have much in common. The themes are exploitation, resistance, and hope. The exhibition highlights women as key actors and inspires hope for change. Marcello Martinez Vega addresses cocoa production in Ecuador. There, cocoa has been not only a luxury food and export hit for centuries, but also a spiritual commodity of great cultural significance. Dewi Candraningrum highlights the consequences of limestone mining for cement production on Java in Indonesia. She shows the impacts on nature and communities.
Environmental protection and the commitment to fair working conditions are shared responsibilities. We also bear responsibility here in Freiburg. Where do our goods come from, and how can we bring about positive change? A scanning station featuring chocolate spread, tuna, or fruit preserves provides information about the origin and production processes of supermarket products. Coloring pages, a reading corner, and a discussion wall invite visitors to participate and ask questions.
