Diversity and Uniqueness in Natural and Cultural Habitats

A double offer! The Museum Natur und Mensch combines the disciplines of natural history and non-European ethnology under one roof. The permanent exhibition is dedicated to the history of the earth, the origin and development of life, geological features and the region's habitats. The museum offers a multifaceted experience for visitors of all ages, with exhibits ranging from the cosmic (a meteorite from outer space) to the palaeontological (a fossilised fish lizard), from the mineralogical (sparkling gemstones) to the zoological (the shy wolf). There are also many interactive stations, such as the bird song clock, the petting zoo, the crawling tunnel and the magic drums, which encourage visitors to engage with the exhibits in a hands-on way. In addition, the museum regularly hosts special ethnological, natural history and interdisciplinary exhibitions that address current issues in these fields.

Note for families

Due to space limitations, you cannot take bicycle trailers and prams into the exhibition rooms. There is not much space on the ground floor for prams either. Bicycle trailers have to be left outside the building. Baby carriers without frames are fine in the exhibition halls. Thank you for your understanding!

Insects – dazzlingly beautiful and critically important

Museum Natur und Mensch

4 June 2025 – 11 January 2026

Our planet is still a planet of insects. They keep the cycle of life going, pollinate, feed and recycle. Nothing works without them! Nevertheless, insects only have a few fans. Many don't care about them, others find them disgusting and most are simply annoyed by them. They are being destroyed en masse. But if insect extinction continues, humanity will also lose important livelihoods. So let's get rid of the prejudices and get down to the facts! Insects are true jewels of evolution with amazing super abilities. Large-format macro photographs by Janosch Waldkircher, hundreds of specimens and many hands-on stations invite you to explore. Fascinating details are revealed under the microscope, such as the compound eyes of a bee. You can try out how you see with them using special glasses. For families, there are a stamp rally, puzzle cubes and other exciting educational games. Or how about a selfie as a beetle, dragonfly or praying mantis?
