Immerse yourself in the imagery of past centuries

The Augustinermuseum offers visitors an insight into a variety of subjects, including prophets, mythical creatures and saints. The collection is centred on the original stone figures and stained-glass windows from Freiburg Minster, as well as medieval wooden sculptures and panel paintings, including works by Matthias Grünewald, Lucas Cranach the Elder and Hans Baldung Grien. In the former choir, the Baroque works are displayed in all their splendour. The gallery on the top floor presents temporary exhibitions of 19th century painting.

The Middle Ages

The Middle Ages

A medieval world of images for the senses: the sandstone figures of Freiburg Minster, located in the former church of the Augustinian monastery, have been restored to much of their former splendour. The recessed pillars divide the space, which is almost twelve metres high, into three naves. The presence of prophets and gargoyles creates a magical and monumental effect. From the wall to the choir, the eye is drawn to the famous Coronation of the Virgin from the main portal of the Minster. The surrounding gallery allows visitors to see the gargoyles at eye level. Medieval panel paintings and wooden sculptures take centre stage in the side cabinets.

From the Sculpture Hall, the route leads to the illuminated choir of the former monastery church. The interior of the church contains a number of altars, sculptures, paintings and small Baroque sculptures. The centrepiece of the collection is the organ case from the Gengenbach abbey church, dating from the 1720s. The organ was dismantled during the Baroque renovation of the church in 1896/98. In 1904, the city of Freiburg acquired the facade, which has been on display since the opening of the Augustinermuseum in 1923. In 1935, the Freiburg firm of M. Welte & Söhne built a church organ behind the facade. Weekly concerts are one of the museum's most popular events.

Sacred Stained Glass

Sacred Stained Glass

Medieval stained-glass windows to marvel at: The Imperial windows from Freiburg Minster, over five metres high and set into the facade. These are displayed alongside stained glass from the choir chapels, many of which were designed by Hans Baldung Grien. Of particular note are the Dominican windows, unique relics of a Freiburg monastery church that no longer exists.

19th Century Paintings

19th Century Paintings

Located in the historic roof space, the painting gallery has a distinctive ambience, characterised by a unique architectural design that allows visitors to admire the Baroque beams and red walls that house paintings by 19th century artists such as Anselm Feuerbach, Wilhelm Hasemann, Ida Maier and Franz Xaver Winterhalter. The works on display cover a wide range of subjects, from popular and frequently exhibited pictures of the Black Forest to landscapes, genre paintings and princely portraits of 19th century high society.
