There have been calls for the establishment of a documentation and information centre on National Socialism in Freiburg since at least the 2010s. Thanks to the commitment of citizens like Marlis Meckel this idea has been taken up time and again in the past, and two important impulses have been decisive for its implementation. In 2016, the Augustinermuseum hosted a temporary exhibition on the topic of 'National Socialism in Freiburg' for the first time. The work in the run up to the exhibition revealed the extent of the remaining gaps in knowledge on this topic. At the same time, it became clear that there was considerable public interest in the subject. Almost simultaneously, the foundation stones of the destroyed synagogue were unearthed during the renovation of the Platz der Alten Synagoge. On 24 June 2018, the City Council unanimously adopted the fundamental resolution to establish a documentation centre on the topic of National Socialism in Freiburg, which is now a reality. To this end, the City purchased the centrally located Rotteckhaus former tourist information building complex. Work on converting it began at the end of 2022.
