In addition to free individual visits, public tours and short guided tours (see calendar), the DZNS also offers bookable guided tours of the permanent and special exhibitions for groups, as well as various workshops, particularly for school groups.
For groups of 10 or more people – whether with or without a guided tour – advance booking or an appointment is required. Group sizes are limited to 15 people. Larger groups must split up or book two or more guided tours.
Even when organised independently, a visit to the DZNS can be a valuable experience. This guide provides organisational and educational advice on preparing for, conducting and following up on a visit to the DZNS with pupils.
Archives are a valuable resource – yet for some people they can be difficult to access. This guide provides guidance on how to search for information and documents relating to family members, or other individuals, in the context of National Socialism.
In collaboration with the ZSL (Centre for School Quality and Teacher Training), we regularly offer professional development courses. Some of these courses can also be delivered as in-school or school-based training. You can find the current programme here.
We are happy to organise training sessions for key stakeholders, subject to availability and by arrangement, on topics such as:
Learning in an out-of-school setting
Serious games for exploring the issues of National Socialism, group-focused hostility and anti-Semitism
Participatory projects on remembrance
Researching individuals in archives

„FreiBuddy“ App. The Real-Life Game about Jewish Life in Freiburg
„FreiBuddy“ App. The Real-Life Game about Jewish Life in Freiburg
The app offers users an interactive augmented reality tour of Freiburg. Three routes and encounters with fictional and real characters offer a variety of insights into the historical and present day Jewish life in Freiburg. In this way, 'FreiBuddy' encourages reflection on the concept of coexistence in urban society. The app is the result of a participatory project funded by the Erinnerung, Verantwortung, Zukunft (EVZ) foundation.
‘FreiBuddy’ is aimed at groups, young people and school classes as well as anyone aged 14 and over who is interested in Jewish life in Freiburg and augmented reality. The app is available with low-barrier elements and in German and English and can be downloaded free of charge from the usual stores. Webtalk Series
Webtalk Series
The Dokumentationszentrum NationalsozialismusFreiburg is organising a series of digital events in cooperation with the Freiburg chapter of the Landeszentrale für politische Bildung, the Gedenkstättenverbund südlicher Oberrhein, the Landesarbeitsgemeinschaft Gedenkstätten und Gedenkstätteninitiativen Baden-Württemberg and the Colloquium Politicum of the Albert Ludwig University of Freiburg. The series focuses on a historical analysis of National Socialism in the border triangle of Germany, France and Switzerland.
Please note that the digital events are held in German.
Students at UWC Robert Bosch College are supporting us as part of their CAS programme (Creativity, Activity, Service). In this project, the students are documenting what information about persecuted people from Freiburg can be found in the digitised records of the Arolsen Archives. In doing so, they are learning how to work with historical archive materials. The resulting overview of the digitally available sources provides a lasting and helpful foundation for further work on remembrance and the teaching of history.
Teaching history on social media
Teaching history on social media
The teaching of history is increasingly taking place on social media. The DZNS uses this platform for digital remembrance culture to convey historical content and broaden the scope for remembrance. Selected historical documents and data are explained through accessible, source-based texts.
"Geburtstagskinder"
The series commemorates – on the occasion of their respective birthdays – the lives of people who were persecuted, tortured and, in some cases, murdered by the Nazis.
"GedenkPause"
The series highlights various historical events linked to the persecution of people by the Nazis.
"Kennt ihr schon...?"
The series showcases memorial sites and venues for extracurricular education on National Socialism in the region.
Commemorating the ‘seizure of power’ in Freiburg 90 years ago
The series, launched in spring 2023, explores local events from the spring of 1933 that contributed to the establishment of the dictatorship.
